Evaluation

The project has been evaluated according to student motivation, the academic quality of the produced material, and the students learning process.

Most of the students explained that the use of video was fun and a motivating factor for their efforts in the course. The process of making video nurtured their creativity and most of the students saw the use of video for communication of scientific work as a powerful tool that students should master in their future careers.

The academic content of the video report is evaluated to be of equal quality to the written assignments.  A video contain more layers of information than a written assignment. By evaluating the story boards and the video reports, the course responsible got a rich picture of the students' knowledge, and the reflections they had undertaken in order to select what they wanted to show in the videos.

Regarding the students' learning and ability to combine theory and practice, the students, and the project team, perceive that the process of producing a video is an educative and creative exercise in translating theory into practice. The students produced learning material themselves, and in groups, evaluated by each other and by the teacher team. This learning process was highly activating, collaborative and student centered.

Project deliverables

This project has demonstrated that video is a powerful supplement to the text based way of producing and communicating academic information. The deliverables of the project are:

  • A pedagogical design for how to include experimental field work in distance learning courses
  • Procedures for how to use video to report larger assignments and field exercises
  • Procedures for how to activate students in the production of learning material by use of video
  • An online based guideline for training students to produce video assignments for communicating academic information to the public

The developed teaching designs and procedures can be implemented in online courses and ordinary courses.

The development of this pilot project was sponsored by the project "Education at its Best" (Den Gode Uddannelse). For more information, please contact course responsible Bjarne W. Strobel, , or the IT Leaning Center, .
